This morning, my dear friend Octavia Spencer was NOMINATED FOR AN ACADEMY AWARD. Holy moly! And just a couple of weeks ago, she took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Minny in The Help.
If I may brag for a moment, I met Octavia through Uncle Josh when I was 17 years old. Full disclosure: I’m 31 now. She is one of the loveliest, brightest, most “salt-of-the-earth” people you could ever meet. She has sat at our table for many Thanksgiving dinners and other family gatherings, and being in her presence is like watching that video of the baby panda getting startled by a sneeze. She is DELIGHTFUL, y’all.
As some of you may remember (“some of you” referring in particular to Haley and Branch), The Lexingtonienne nabbed an *exclusive* interview with Octavia in July of 2010, just before filming of The Help began. CHECK IT OUT AGAIN RIGHT HERE!
This interview is really fun for me to look back on for two reasons. First, Octavia said she hoped it would “clean up” at the box office. The Help spent 3 weeks at number 1, and made over $205M worldwide. I’d call that “cleaning up.” The second thing that really tickles me is a question and answer I didn’t publish here on The Lexingtonienne. Here it is:
Q: Can I be your Oscar date when you get nominated? 😉 {I KNEW IT!!!!}
A: {no response}
I’m pretty sure that’s a YES. (In all seriousness, Uncle Josh is accompanying Octavia to the Screen Actors Guild Awards this Sunday… so look for them on the red carpet!)
CONGRATULATIONS, ROCK! You deserve every good thing.
Coming up soon: a wintry bean soup, a fabulous Brussels sprout salad, and possibly even more photos of this little person:
