I’m what the psychology types call an introvert.

My personal motto is, “The fewer, the merrier.”

And I love to be alone. I almost never get lonely.

When it comes to making new friends, I can put on my extrovert face and pretend to be social and outgoing. But in general, I prefer the company of old friends who already “get” me. 🙂

But when a guy as cute as this one comes along, I’m pretty excited to have a new friend. This is Owen, y’all. He was born on July 6 to Mike’s cousin John (aka DJ Blista) and his wife, Alexi.

As an excuse to come over and meet Owen, I made the new parents a big batch of my mother-in-law’s famous bolognese sauce and a loaf of sour cream chocolate chip cake. They totally fell for my trick. 😉

Congratulations to John & Alexi on their precious arrival! And congratulations to YOU, blog readers, on the fortuitous occasion that you have come across this really fabulous cake recipe. I happened to find it the other day in the Joy of Cooking, and it has quickly become a new favorite. You do not want to miss out on this one.

    SOUR CREAM CHOCOLATE CHIP CAKE
    From the Joy of Cooking

5 T butter, melted and cooled slightly
    2/3 C sugar
    1 t vanilla
    1/4 t salt
    1 C sour cream
    1 large egg
    3/4 t baking soda
    3/4 t baking powder
    1 1/2 C all-purpose flour
3/4 C miniature or regular chocolate chips (Joy suggests semisweet. I used milk chocolate.)

Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour one 9×5 inch loaf pan. Pour melted butter into a large mixing bowl. Add sugar, vanilla, salt, sour cream, and egg and stir together until smooth. Whisk baking soda and baking powder together in a small bowl to break up any lumps. Add to mixture in pinches and whisk in. Stir in flour until just combined. (Over-mixing will overstimulate the gluten in the flour and make your cake tough.) Stir in chocolate chips.

Scrape the batter into the pan and spread evenly. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 40-45 minutes. (Mine took longer, about an hour.) Let cool in the pan on a rack for 10 minutes. Slide a thin knife around the cake to detach it from the pan. Invert the cake and let it cool right side up on the rack.

I sliced my cake up, put the slices in cellophane bags from Michael’s Craft Store, and took some to the new parents and some for our Hollywood Bowl picnic.

I got into LAX last night and am already missing everyone in Kentucky…

    Cousin Parker and Cousin Ava

    Aunt Allison (here with Cooper)

    Cousin Kate and Little Brother

    Mama, Lori, and Dad

    Papaw

Mimi, who wouldn’t let me take her picture but whose blueberry pies are very photogenic

    Sister and Dan

and, most of all — yep, I’m playing favorites here — my main man Cooper

I better run… now that I’m back in LA, I have a consultation with my plastic surgeon, a meeting with my guru, and an appointment to test-drive a Porsche I can’t afford. (Just kidding, I’m just going to the grocery store. In my Camry.)

Thanks to all for a wonderful visit in Lexington!

Have a fantastic weekend, everybody! I’ll be back in the kitchen next week and blogging some new recipes, so stay tuned…

    xoxo,

My Seester having a baby is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me (haha – easy for me to say).

Cooper is the cutest, sweetest, smartest, most well-spoken and snorgalicious thing you’ve ever seen…

    … and he smiles a LOT…

… and he has REALLY cute feet. (For the record, btw, I do NOT love feet. I only love cute little fat baby feet.)

I’ve been so lucky to have him babysit me this week while his mama went back to her important lawyer job.

The sad part is, I live really far away from him, and I’m going back to California tomorrow. Cooper is — understandably — very upset about this.

But I plan to come back and see him in a couple of months. You know, to make sure he hasn’t forgotten any of the tricks I taught him, such as hopping on one foot, riding a unicycle, and playing the tuba. (He’s shy about his talents, though, and wouldn’t let me take his picture while he was performing. Here’s a post-bath photo instead.)

Cooper, you be good while your Mamasissy is gone… I’ll be back to check on you before you know it!

    Little baby fist bump,

    Hannah

P.S. Hi, Mike! I can’t WAIT to see you tomorrow night! I’ve missed you.

There is only ONE occasion in your little boy’s life that you get to put him in a dress, and that is on his Baptism day.

That’s not to say he’ll never wear a dress again. But those other times will be his own choice.

Cooper was pretty good about it (he wore his Uncle Ross’s christening gown)…

… but something tells me he doesn’t want to wear any more dresses.

Little Boys, take heart — if you put on a Baptism gown, you get lots of gifts!

You may even get a cool hat like Cooper got from his Great Aunt Tara.

He was so excited, he wanted to try it on right away. And since he was so good at church while getting the water sprinkled over his head, we let him wear it.

Little Boys, if you wear a gown like Cooper did, you may also get a quilt with a turtle on it, sewn by the very thoughtful ladies at Church. As you surely know, Jesus loved turtles. He had a pet one named Skipperdee.

And your older cousin will come over and help you celebrate the fact that you wore a gown by making silly faces and performing feats of acrobatics. Cooper’s cousin is John Mac. Isn’t he cute??

So you see, Little Boys? Wearing a dress isn’t so bad. High heels, however, are a different story.

Welcome to the flock, Cooper! Your Mamasissy loves you and thinks you are skinny.

    Love,

    Hannah
