Hubba Bubba and I both come from families where Christmas is a BIG DEAL, filled with family, feasting, and unchanging traditions. His family celebrates with the Italian Feast of the Seven Fishes, or La Vigilia. In my family it wouldn’t be Christmas without my Mama’s signature Stockings Extraordinaire and Christmas morning sausage casserole (more on that later).

It wasn’t until after we’d been together for five years and were married that Hubba Bubba or I ever spent a Christmas away from our families. He bit the bullet first. We spent our first married Christmas with my family in Kentucky, which I thought was fair, seeing as he is older and had enjoyed several more Christmases with his family than I had with mine. But until then, Christmas away from home and family seemed unimaginable.

Now, however, living in California and raising a toddler, we realize it’s time to stay at “home” at Christmas and to begin our own traditions. While we are still navigating all the choices (where to visit Santa, which Christmas church service to attend, just how many Christmas meals to serve and when)… there was one tradition we agreed upon with no discussion.

Every Christmas, Clark & Ellen here are going to put up the BIGGEST CHRISTMAS TREE we can fit in our house.

Who cares if it’s expensive or disproportionately large in our living room or if the scent of fresh pine is slightly overwhelming? That is our CHRISTMAS TREE.

So on the Fifth Day of Christmas…

Here’s hoping there aren’t any squirrels in it,
