Help me. I am about to sign up for a TLC decorating show so I don’t have to think about this anymore. Here is the canvas / our bedroom in its current humble state. Don’t judge, as these are the BEFORE photos:

When we moved into our house in November, we focused our decorating efforts on the downstairs, since that’s what people see first. Now we are ready to move on to our bedroom. This really shouldn’t be that hard. Bedding. Paint. Curtains. Done. (Right?)

Below, on the left are the curtains we purchased from Horchow. They’re kind of a champagne color with metallic gold bees embroidered on them. A little classic, a little kitschy. I’m into it. Plus they go well with the black-out blinds we installed immediately upon moving in and which cost us a small fortune and which are most definitely staying. The aqua swatch is the material of the headboard we are having custom made. It was inspired by Don & Betty’s headboard on Mad Men.

Still to purchase: bedding, including a dust ruffle or bed skirt. I was thinking we should go with something neutral, like ivory. Also still TBD: paint color. I had thought — again — something neutral, what with our turquoise headboard and gold bee curtains. Isn’t that enough going on? But now I’m worried that it’s boring and flat. The problem is, I have no idea what direction to go in now.

Obviously we are also going to want to replace those nifty lamps we’re currently using, but I can be flexible with that. As for our night stands, the ones you see there are from Ikea, and because I love them from a functional perspective and because they’re in great shape, I’m thinking about gold leafing them. Artificial metallic gold leafing, obvi. This isn’t Coming to America.

OK, friends. You’ve seen the blank slate. What would you do if you were the Duffys? You think about it and get back to me. In the meantime, I’ll be looking at my Elle Decor that came in the mail today.

xoxo,
Hannah

    Pirate theme.

    That is all.

We went gray with our bedroom walls. Goes well with tans, whites, and aqua-type colors (our cold-weather bedspread is in that range).

Maybe paint the walls the color of your shades? Or the color of my bedroom or my guest rooms… 🙂

Love the headboard idea from Mad Men! I just found out about this incredible online design magazine… http://www.lonnymag.com. The girl that does it used to work for Domino.
You definitely need to check that out. I was drooling yesterday while looking at it online. BTW, has your delivery arrived yet?!! It was supposed to be there last Friday.

I think painting the walls in a really pale shade of the teal from the headboard would pull it together, especially if you are going to gold-leaf the tables, which will pull out the color of the bees from the curtains. If you want to go neutral on the walls, then maybe you could find bedding that has the teal & gold in it instead. I’m no decorator though…bet your grandma could give good ideas! 🙂

    Dear Hannah-
I am Ross’ roomates’ mother. You’re mother passed this on to me and I love it. I am a decorator and I recently redecorated my diningroom with a custom fabric that I designed based on a wallcovering from Madmen. I can send you a photo – it was just featured in a local magazine. Anyway, I am all over this challenge! Do the curtains cover all three windows? Can you photo the end tables? I have fake gold leafed many objets in my own home so I think
that sounds great, but would like to see the tables up close. Can’t wait yo read the other entries—
